Gulf states rush to the rescue

Mideast Gulf states have pledged Egypt $12bn in aid, which will come as a much-needed boost for the coun-try’s ailing economy, but could carry a political agenda. Saudi Arabia has offered Egypt a $1bn grant, $2bn in oi products and gas, and a $2bn deposit at the country’s centra bank, the Saudi finance ministry says. The UAE has pledged a $1bn grant and a $2bn interest-free loan. And it has sent a 225,000 bl diesel cargo to help bridge a severe fuel shortage. Kuwait has announced a $4bn aid package, comprising a $2bn deposit in the central bank, a $1bn grant and $1bn of crude and products.
