He presents an example of a third age initiative with a major focus on adding life to years. The combination of educational activities, social engagement, including volunteering and using older people as agents of change, provides a valuable case study that other public health practitioners working towards adding life to years might emulate.In some countries, adding years to life and life to years is more problematic with Godson et al (pg 183-191) demonstrating how devastating environmental pollution can be to Nigerian communities living in close proximity to industrial activity. The increase in air, soil and water induced environmental morbidities, including cancers, is a serious matter of public health concern, requiring actions to audit and regulate industries that fail to comply with environmental standards so that chronic illnesses and associated mortality is reduced.
