Invasive meningococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening infection caused by the Gram-negative bacterium Neis-seria meningitidis. Approximately 500 000 cases of the disease occur globally each year, although rates vary by geographic region and the incidence often fluctuates in an irregular fashion, with outbreaks and epidemics being typical. Infants are the most commonly affected, although the rate of disease peaks again in adolescents and young adults, with adolescents generally having the highest rates of mortality.
