The critical care community has struggled to develop effective online educational tools. We have experienced a robust e-mail listserv (piculist: http://piculist.vpicu.net) and a compendium site (http://PedsCCM.org) that has warehoused announcements, opportunities, an evidence-based journal club of critical appraisals of relevant research, and links to some educational resources online. Full disclosure: the authors of this editorial have been heavily involved in these resources. Online compendia have thrived only on a very large scale (e.g., Wikipedia, eMedicine, and UpToDate) (1-3), where the accumulated mass is commendable, but the resulting products may vary in quality or they command hefty subscription fees. Although interactive techniques have been evolving to include social networking sites, blogs, wikis, folksonomies, video sharing sites, hosted services, web applications, and mash-ups (the arbitrary dividing line between Web 1.0 and 2.0) (4), the critical care web has stalled.
