Application of a clinical transfusion score to pediatric cardiac surgical patients.

It is often difficult to define the indication for transfusion prospectively in a way that lends itself to audit. Faced with the recognized risks associated with blood product transfusion, it is vital that we can justify the risk of exposure on the grounds of clinical benefit to the patient.We plan to use this scoring system prospectively with the aim of reducing unnecessary blood transfusions. It will also empower steftiercKallenge transfusion decisions.The authors have not disclosed any potential conflicts of interest.
