Getting your crop from tree to pie may require flexibility

We are considered to be a small grower. We have a 'Maramec' orchard that produced slightly over 20,000 pounds in 2009 with a potential of 40,000 pounds annually when the smaller trees mature. Although small, I take pecan production very seriously. Ourorchard is primarily random. I began grafting existing sprouts in 1979. The annual work begins in January with the removal of selected trees to insure adequate sunlight to all parts of the orchard. In 2009 we applied 150 pounds of nitrogen per acre during the third week of March. We noticed abundant catkins which was an early indicator of a good nut set. We began applying zinc shortly thereafter. We set out pheromone traps to determine when to spray for nut casebearer moths.
