UPM is streamlining its European paper business to improve profitability, and as a result plans to remove 800,000 tonnes of production in France, Finland and the UK by the end of Q1, 2015. To this end they plan to close the following machines: Chapelle Dar-blay PM3 in France (130,000tpy newsprint); Jamsa River Mills PM5 (235,000tpy SC) and Kaukas PM2 in Finland (225,000tpy mechanical coated); and Shotton PM1 in the UK (215,000tpy newsprint). The mills will continue to produce paper on other machines at each site. The Shotton site in Flintshire makes just short of half a million tonnes of standard newsprint on two machines, with a workforce of around 370; closure of PM1 puts around 130 jobs at risk.
