To achieve maximum productivity, a PM needs press felts which are: i) tailored for their position in the press section, and ii) able to adapt to higher speeds and press loadings, increased recycled stock and higher paper surface requirements. To design such felts, tamfelt has developed a pilot press and several simulators which can predict the performance of the felts-a water removal simulator, a water removal simulator, a water permeability simulator. This technology has led to the development of a new generation of press felts with an ultra smooth base fabric design. The author presents examples of these felts in action on PMs making the following grades: SC, newsprint, finepaper and Kraftpaper. The benefits include: Longer felt life Higher running speeds Improved paper properties- with less two-sidedness To maintain press felt efficiencies, mill and suppliers are involved in continuous meetings which review press felt performance and plan for improvements. In this on-going development programme, Tamfelt uses its database of press felt installations to compare the performances of different PMs making the same paper grade. This makes it possible to recommend the optimum felt for a particualr grade and position in the press section.
