A small-scale straw pulping process which avoids the black liquor problem is up and running on pilot scale at Ahlstrom's Pulp Processing Plant in Radcliffe.Developed by BioRegional MiniMills UK in partnership with UK producers of P&W grades,the new process is a closed loop system which is designed to overcome the impediments to straw pulping,ie i)The pollution of rivers and receiving water from the silica rich effluent or black liquor.The MiniMill recovers energy from the effluent and uses it in the pulping process.Pulping chemicals are also recovered and re-used.
