A new de-inking technology which replaces fatty acid/soap with silicone derivates has been developed by Nopco Paper Technology. It is especially successful in removing ash without loss of yield, an important consideration for recycling mills at a time of rising recovered paper costs and increasing ash content. In Part 1 of this article, the author describes the development of silicone derivates for a newsprint DIP plant; in Part 11, Rhein Paper describes its experiences with the new technology in the production of recycled newsprint. Laboratory results show that when silicone derivatives are substituted for conventional fatty acid/soap, they achieve comparable ink removal at a comparable or improved yield. This is achieved without the additional costs of the traditional fatty acid/soap system, that is to say, the need for special storage, for pre-treatment like saponification and for the adjustment of water hardness. The simplicity of the silicone derivate system can bring savings of 15 to 30% in collection - ink removal -costs alone. The benefits soar when increased yield is factored in - an improvement of just 1% in yield enables huge cost savings.
