A forming board which improves the tear strength of paper, has been invented by Robert Longbottom of Poly Hi Solidur and validated in two mills-on various grammages of paper and board. The Optiform invention, controls the agitation of the stock on the forming fabric to ensure that the pulp fibres maintain the random alignment which is good for tear strength-=controlled agitation prevents the fibres from aligning in parallel to the direction of travel of the forming fabric, a common problem with conventional deflocculation devices. The new forming board is a precision made component with special grooves at an angle to the fabric direction. This induces sideway moving pulses in the stock-pulses which originate from a single source at one side of the forming fabric, and which travel across the fabric as a single wave. The result is a more controlled and uniform agitation of the stock, an agitation which affects all of the stock equally.
