Canine leishmaniasis (CanL) by Leishmania infantum is a widespread disease in Mediterranean areas. Prevalence of canine infections is an important epidemiological parameter, the correct estimation of which depends on the reliable identification of infected dogs. Serological techniques represent the reference screening test for mass surveys, however it is difficult to establish when the dog develops a detectable immune response. Recent studies have investigated on the use of PCR in the detection of CanL, with different results (Solano Gallego L et al, 2001, I Clin Microbiol, 39: 560-563; Lachaud L et al, 2002, J Clin Microbiol, 40: 210-215). The objective of the present study was to compare performances of traditional and molecular laboratory techniques applied on different bioptic samples for the detection of CanL in the endemic focus of Salina Island, Eolian Archipelago, Sicily, Italy.
