The coke scenario of the German and EU 15 steel industry

Approximately 29 to 30 million t liquid hot metal will be needed in future for steei production in Germany and 90 to 95 million t in the EU15. This amount of hot metal is produced in blast furnaces. Therefore a certain amount of coke is indispensable necessary. In Germany actually five coke plants representing the latest state of the art technology are operated. The five coke plants actually supply 77 % of the German steel industry's coke demand. In the EU 15 38 coke oven plants produce 82,5 percent of the coke needed by the blast furnaces and sinter plants. On the background of the growth rate in worldwide blast furnace iron making and especialiy the increase of blast furnace capacity in some European works a renaissance of the coking industry is on the way for Europe.
