If a life that passes along a predetermined path at a predetermined speed is regarded as a secure life, then the life Ken Saeki has led since leaving Japan lies at the other extreme. After graduating from university, Saeki went to then war-torn Vietnam as a civilian employee of the U.S. Army and worked in its press section for seven years until the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. After that, he lived in the United States for a year, then headed back to Asia. Since he had already left Japan to finda new life abroad, it unsettled him to even contemplate returning home. Rather, he sought a country where he would be able to lead a less stressful life. In those days, Saigon, Manila and Rangoon were the three major cities of Asia. But Saeki chose Bangkok which looked more comfortable to live in.
