Last month we featured an article about research being done by B.C. biologist Alexandra Morton, which supported her claim that floating fish farm pens near migratory routes of juvenile pink and chum salmon hurt the wild fish. In short, sea lice from the farmed salmon attack young salmon as they swim by. While adult salmon can handle a few sea lice, the parasites will kill juveniles. Although Pacific Fishing covered the matter in 2004, we revisited Morton's thesis last month because of significant new support from a scholarly paper published by the "Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences." We told you we'd seek out an opposing view. Here is a response from Ian Roberts of the B.C. salmon farming industry.
