When William H. Smith founded Gemini Coatings in 1964 in El Reno, Oklahoma, his company was focused on lacquer products for wood. In the ensuing years, he worked to sharpen this focus, building a business that became known as a specialty manufacturer and developer of wood coatings. Today, Gemini Coatings specializes in wood coatings as well as aerosol finishes and products for wood-finishing touch-up and repair. In 1984, die company went in a new direction operationally and took the first steps down the path of becoming employee-owned. The journey was completed in 2003, when Gemini stock became 100 percent owned by employees. Since that time, nearly 150 employee-owners have worked to bring in more than $50 million each year.
