NE AFTERNOON IN LATE NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR, my Sister brought me a calendar. She donated money to an organization that helps paralyzed veterans, and it came to her as a thank-you. She passed it on to me. The calendar is old-fashioned, and by that I mean it's made of paper, not pixels. So it hangs behind me on the wall of my office. The pages are full of gardening tips, like when to plant potatoes (before the vernal equinox), and other bits of earthy, time—related information, like definitions for the phases of the moon. Those are in turn surrounded by seasonally appropriate pictures of plants, flowers, landscapes and birds.
