Wollastonite (calcium metasilicate)is growing in popularity as a versatile additive in coatings to reduce cost and improve performance. Due to wollastonite's unique chemistry and acicular structure, this naturally occurring mineral allows formulators to improve the cohesive strength of their coatings to obtain better corrosion and barrier properties, extend in-can stability due to its high pH, and be thermally stable at high temperatures. Its function as an auxiliary pigment to extend traditional corrosion inhibitors, enhance TiO2 and replace other additives offers significant cost savings and reduction in VOCs. Wollastonite is also a safe, non-hazardous mineral for meeting stringent health and environmental standards.
