Situation and Outlook in Selected Countries Forecast for 1996/97 and Revised 1995/96 Estimates

Canadian sugar production in 1996/97 is forecast at 140,000 tons, down 7 percent from the revised 1995/96 production estimate of 151,000 tons. An expected 10 percent decrease in sugarbeet yields accounts for most of the 1996/97 sugar production decline. Canadian sugar exports in 1996/97 are forecast at 20,000 metric tons, unchanged from the revised 1995/96 estimate but more than 50 percent below 1994/95 shipments. The U.S. TRQ on refined sugar imports, imposed in fiscal year 1995/96 (beginning in October 1), will reduce Canadian sugar exports to the United States, its main market. Prior to January 1, 1995 U.S. imports of refined sugar from Canada were exempt from the TRQ.
