Update on Section 52 Cadastral Survey Act 2002

It has become apparent over the last two years that there is no "quick fix" to the Section 52 issue, mainly because there are such a wide range of views on the matter. Changing the legislation is potentially a long and difficult process, with no guarantee of a satisfactory outcome. Imposing a time limit in Section 52, such that a notice to correct any error in a dataset must be received by the surveyor responsible within say 15 years of that dataset being approved, appears to be widely supported from the limited consultation carried out to date. The most appropriate time for NZIS to press for such a change however, would be when other changes are proposed to be made to the Cadastral Survey Act 2002. Further consultation with members and other interested parties would be necessary prior to proceeding with any such action.
