Rourkela Steel Plant is the largest producer of cold rolled non-oriented (CRNO) steels in the country. The paper discusses the recent efforts made towards development of M-36 grade CRNO steels exhibiting superior magnetic properties and low core loss values. A systematic study was carried out to evaluate the influence of alloy chemistry, hot rolling parameters and decarb-annealing conditions on the core loss values. Further, to minimize mill load in the finishing stands, which is a constant source of concern to the hot strip mill (HSM) operators, an experimental roll bite lubrication (RBL) system was introduced in stand Fl of the mill. This enabled a -10% reduction in the load facilitating smooth rolling of CRNO steels.
