GDP and the Economy: Advance Estimates for the First Quarter of 2010

REAL GROSS domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.2 percent in the first quarter of 2010, according to the "advance" estimates of the national income and product accounts (NIPAs) (chart 1 and table 1). In the fourth quarter of 2009, real GDP increased 5.6 percent. The deceleration in real GDP in the first quarter primarily reflected decelerations in inventory investment and exports, a downturn in residential fixed investment, and a larger decrease in state and local government spending. In contrast, consumer spending accelerated, and imports slowed.
