Innovative Measurement and Control of Mould Plates for Width Control in Slab Caster

Bokaro Steel Plant SAIL produces slabs of sized 200mm x950 -1850mm and 7.5 -10.5m length at slab caster. An on-line measurement and mould adjustment system for casting a new width, after changeover of the casting sequence, has been developed and implemented at the Slab Caster of Bokaro Steel Plant, replacing the earlier practice of manual measurement of the distance between mould plates which consumed about 1.5 hrs resulting in reduction of throughput. The new system is based on non contact LASER sensor, PLC and interfacing with existing control scheme. The system has ensured an automatic cold adjustment of the mould width with an accuracy of + 2mm and also facilitates reduction in delays owing to manual measurement and adjustment of the mould plates.
