A laidback man devoted to his family and the simple pleasures of gardening, Ken Paterson rarely spoke of the World War II experiences that earned him a Military Cross for bravery. Like many New Zealand men of his era, Ken never openly discussed his wartime involvement, and on his return home, devoted himself to raising a family, building his business interests, and contributing to community causes. A relaxed man, Ken was someone who listened to others and more often than not, was always able to give sage advice to those who sought his counsel. Admired for his generosity, patience and a lighthearted, nonjudgmental attitude, Ken never seemed to sweat the small stuff in life. This was perhaps best exemplified by his daily habit which he rigorously upheld for more than half his life, that of a 15 minute kip after lunch, sleeping upright in his chair.
