Facilitators and challenges to implement the American College of Surgeons/Association of Program Directors in Surgery National Surgical Skills Curriculum in the European Union

To the Editors:We read with interest the recent report from Korn-dorffer et al entitled "The American College of Surgeons (ACS)/Association of Program Directors (APDS) in Surgery National Skills Curriculum: Adoption rate, challenges and strategies for effective implementation into surgical residency programs."1 We agree with the authors that it represents a significant step toward standardization of skills training and objective assessment for general surgery residents. And we believe it has the potential to not only improve uniformly the US programs, but also others worldwide, because it is provided as a comprehensive, standardized, ready-to-use, and free-of-charge product that saves many development hours and costs.This study highlights the fact that the existence of a fully developed and widely available educational product does not automatically translate to successful implementation. The survey developed in the US provides valuable insights into the facilitators and barriers to promote its full-scale implementation. In this respect, we think some of them differ in the European Union (EU) owing to sociocultural differences.
