Based on the values of distribution coefficients, the affinity series of rare earth elements (III) nitrate complexes for the anion exchanger Dowex 1 * 2 in 22.5 M CH_3OH-0.85 M CH_3COOH-0.35 MHNO_3, system was found in the order of Sm(III)>Nd(III)> Er(III)>Tm(III)>Yb(III)>Y(III) whereas for Dowex 1 * 4 the affinity series was: Nd(III)>Eu(III)>Sm(III)>La(III)>Pt(lI[)>Gd(III) Taking into account the position of Y(III), Sm(III), La (FIT) and Nd(III) in the proposed affinity series of rare earth elemftJif (III) nitrate complexes, the separation of Y(III) from Nd(III)>Sm(III) from Nd(III) and of La(III) from Nd(III) on the anion exchangers Dowex 1 (type 1), cross-linking 2 and 4% divinyl benzene, in the nitrate form was studied by frontal analysis. Good results were obtained with Dowex 1 * 4 in 22.5 M CH_3OH-0.85 M CH_3COOH-0.35 M HNO_3 system. The recommended method can be used as an effective technique for making yttrium (III) free from neodymium (III).
