Sponge Iron or Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) as it is often referred to, is the product obtained from direct reduction of iron ore and having an iron content 83-92 per cent. During the reduction process, the oxygen in the iron ore is eliminated, leaving void space and the whole mass becomes, poms and spongy in appearance. Hence the name 'sponge Iron'. Sponge iron is produced either in lumps or pellet form and is also available in a compact and briquetted form called Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) which is produced by compacting DRI by subjecting it to high temperature. Sponge iron is widely used as an important raw material for steel making via Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Induction Furnace (IF) routes, substituting and supplementing scrap.
