The orientation properties of aggregated bacterioehlorophyli c in a nematic liquid crystal matrix have been studied by means of polarized steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopy. The pigment introduced to the model system was predominantly in tetrametic (or hexameric) form with absorption maxima located at about 670 and 710 nm. Two tetramers with long-wavelength maxima at 704 and 722 nm could be distinguished. They exhibited different orientations in liquid crystal and different yields of fluorescence. Both tetramers exhibited delayed luminescence in the μs time region.
