Having started up as a medium-sized company, SUD-CHEMIE AC (Fig.1) has climbed its way into the top ten of German chemical corporations. It was founded back in 1857. One of the founders was the world famous chemist J. v. Liebig. His invention of superphosphate fertilizer formed the basis for a product range at the factory in Heufeld/Bavaria (D). In 1906, extraction of what is commonly known as "fuller's earth" was started at Moosburg; it was used to bleach and purify edible oils and fats. In 1941 followed the founding of SUD-CHEMIE AC, which today comprises over 60 production and sales companies. The business report for 2004 puts the total number of employees at 5 100, who generate sales of EUR 862 mill. SUD-CHEMIE AC supplies 14 market sectors with a large number of products, which use the wide range of properties of the base material; the chemicals, paper, pharmaceuticals, construction, and ceramics industries, foundries, environmental protection, horticulture and pet supplies, sulphur production and tar processing are just some typical applications
