If materials ensuring rapid slag formation from refractory products are introduced in the batch, the degree of MnO reduction in the direct alloying of steel is considerably increased. Lime, limestone, dolomite, or waste slag may be used as fluxes in the mixtures for direct alloying of steel in the ladle. When using slags from the production of metallic manganese and open-hearth and converter slags, the process may be conducted under relatively acidic slags; the manganese extraction from the ore is then around 80 percent, as against 40-50 percent in the traditional reduction and alloying of steel.
