The working life of the Russian KShU-38 fireclay lining used for the intermediate ladles at continuous-casting machine (CCM) 1 in the electrosteel-smelting shop (ESSS) at the Ural'skaya Steel Company is short (3-5 melts), especially in the walls and floor. To increase its life and improve lining application, operation, and maintenance, tests are conducted in the ESSS with PTMS gunite produced by Kombinat Magnezit Joint Stock Company. This material is based on sintered periclase and is intended for lining application by wet guniting; it should be capable of withstanding a long series of melts. According to the TT 200-200-99 specifications, this gunite contains no less than 83 percent MgO and no more than 4 percent SiO_2; 2.5 percent Fe_2O_3 and 2 percent A1_2O_3 (the CaO content is not specified). The mixture consists of grains of size 0.5-0.1 mm (53-63 percent) and 0.1-0 mm (34-38 percent), as well as 1-0.5 mm (3-6 percent); the content of larger grains is no more than 2 percent.
