In a dc arc furnace, the design of the current lead at the bottom electrode may affect the current-bearing melt in the bath and also the arc behavior. Mathematical models are developed for the magnetic field strength close to a current lead in the form of a three-dimensional helix and a three-dimensional Archimedes helix. As an example, the behavior of the axial and radial components of the magnetic field strength is simulated over the depth and radius of the bath in a dc arc furnace. The influence of the number of turns in the lead on the increment in the magnetic field strength and on the axial symmetry of the field's radial component is analyzed.
