NEW PLANT FOR THE PRODUCTION OF LARGE-DIAMETER PIPE

Russian metallurgy is about to make its largest investment of the past decade. The Russian government has decided to create the Zavod po Priozvodstvu Trub Bol'shogo Diametra Joint Stock Company, which will construct and then operate a production facility for thick rolled sheets and single-seam large-diameter pipe on the basis of the Nizhnetagil'skii Metallurgicheskii Kombinat Joint Stock Company. The facility is to include a 5000 thick-sheet mill and pipe electrowelding shops with a section for the application of three-layer external polymer anticorrosional and internal smooth coatings. This decision follows considerable efforts by the Russian Economics Ministry and the International Society of Metallurgists, together with the Baikov Institute of Metallurgy and Materials Science, the Gipromez Joint Stock Company, and the Central Scientific-Research Institute of Ferrous Metallurgy, to determine the future demand for large-diameter pipe and thick rolled sheet, the possibility of organizing their production at existing facilities, the selection of the optimal location of the new production capacity, and the economic expediency of such production capacity.
