Industry gears up for 2000 version of ISO 9000 standards

The ISO 9000 standards have been accepted as the basis for meeting quality related requirements. Till date, an estimated 6,000 units have been certified. The ISO standards were first published in 1987 and were later revised in 1994. After a comprehensive review, the ISO has now come out with the 2000 revision which have been adopted by the Bureau of India Standards (BIS). These include ISO 9000:2000 Quality Management Systems (fundamentals and vocabulary). ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management Systems (henceforth the sole certification standard in the series), and ISO 9004:2000 Quality Management Systems (guidelines for performance improvements).Bureau of Indian Standards is a 'participatory' member of ISO Technical Committee ISO/TC 176 on quality management and quality assurance. India had made a major contribution to the year 2000 version and some of the comments played an important role in reducing various non-tariff trade barriers which India could have faced. The new versions of ISO 9000 standards significantly, are based on quality management principles like customer focus, leadership, involvement of people, process approach and continual improvement.
