Following 50 years of development, China has becomes the world's largest coke-making country. Technological progress continues to world standards, in particular in dry coke quenching and the drying of coal before charging, but there is also a large gap in the technology between advanced and backward coke making works. The first coke oven batteries in China were built in the 1920s. At that time four coke oven batteries of Koppers type with 40 ovens each and one coke oven battery of the Otto type with 20 ovens were built at the Anshan Iron Works and Shijiazhuang Coke Plant respectively.
