In an alternative technology to electromagnetic stirring, the hydrostatic pressure of metal feeding the mushy core of a strand can be increased by the application of an electromagnetic force. Used in conjunction with small amounts of soft reduction, this essentially suppresses the formation of 'V' segregation and porosity.
