Originally designed for a 10 year (30Mt) campaign, the life of British Steel's largest furnace at Redcar on Teesside has been extended by stabilising output at 9200t/d (7 percent below peak output) and installing water cooled staves in the stack and throat regions. To meet steelmaking targets with reduced hot metal, steelmaking practices have been modified to decrease hot metal input to 0.87t/t liquid steel.
