Steelworks on postcards -- Bohler kapfenberg a model of innovation and corporate identity for 100 years

Picture postcard printing climaxed early this century, and steelworks extensively used them to demonstrate their corporate identity. Some even ignored the prevailing secrecy habits and revealed details of process technology - as the present example shows. Hence, postcards can be a useful documentary for the pre-wars steel industry In September 1994, Great Britain celebrated its 100th anniversary of the picture postcard with a one week exhibition at Westminster Royal Horticultural Halls in London. In the context of historical metallurgy, it may be of interest to note that the strongest growth in world steel output is 6.2 percent p.a., coincided with the postcard's high time in 1895 - 1920. Steel works extensively used this new media to enhanced public relations during that period. A particular case in point is the Kapfenberg Works of Bonier in Austria which commemorated its centenary last September. A few other steelworks have seemingly documented the technological changes in steelmaking to the same way with comparable examples being Cammel Laird in Sheffield (England), Societe John Cockerill in Seraing (Belgium), Usines Metallurgiques du Hainaut in Couillet (Belgium), Krupp in Essen (Germany), Schneider in Le Creusot (France), Vitkovice in Ostrava (Czech Republic), and the Yawata Iron & Steel Works (Japan), for which ample postcards are at hand.
