Houston's Reliant Stadium features the largest retractable roof in the U.S., made possible by innovative engineering and high-strength steel. A new age in multipurpose venues began when Reliant Stadium opened in Houston, TX last August. Reliant Stadium is home to two major tenants: the Houston Texans and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. These two tenants have vastly different requirements. The Houston Texans are the newest team in the National Football League and prefer to play their games on natural grass turf in an open-air setting. However, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo fill the seats from late February to mid-March and need a weather-tight arena-like setting for the rodeo and its concert events. The solution to satisfy these diverse needs was to build the NFL's first retractable roof stadium.
