EDITOR'S NOTE: This continues the serialization of the book, Sawmilling With Paw, written by Jack E. Norwood, fourth in a line of small time North Carolina sawmillers and loggers. (The series began in the January 2012 issue.) One of Norwood's sons wasthe fifth generation until his death in 2009. Jack's father was a lifetime sawmiller and even practiced his craft in the Army in France in World War I. His grandfather operated a shingle mill and planer in the early 1900s and his great-grandfather sawedlumber with waterpower in the late 1800s. After fires wiped out his planer and sawmill, Jack turned to logging. Today he oversees a three-man logging crew cutting primarily on his land. The book's setting is Wake County, NC in the 1930s.
