Little Rube roared up in his car shortly after sunup. Paw and I were already at Ball's store. The sky was red and the air nippy in the October morning. We climbed into the back seat of the heavy car. Robert Earl was slumped in the front passenger seat, his hat across his face. Little Rube nodded toward Robert Earl, "Hell of a snake-watcher I got with me, ain't he? Too cool for them to crawl much, I suppose."
