摘要

We were quiet as we drove back through the woods. Little Rube turned the wheel over to Robert Earl. Mrs. Sills had got his goat. He was used to being the big talker in a conversation, and he was put out that Paw had squelched his Bible act. "Yes," hepiously said, "I usually have a word of prayer with widow ladies, before we discuss a timber deal. It seems to clear the air." Paw wanted to know what sort of run-in Stanley Bledsoe had with Little Rube's Pap. "They ran against each other in a county commissioner's election back there sometime," said Little Rube. "Daddy beat him by a wide margin and both of them said some mean things about the other. I don't think Mr. Stanley ever got over his defeat. He took it hard. Yes, and she ain't forgot it neither."
