Mike McCoy made a name for himself harvesting old-g hardwood and pine from the trick, high slopes of the Ouachita Mountains in the arrowhead-shaped tip of extreme southeastern Oklahoma. He started out on his own a decade ago when he bought a used tongthrower and cable rig from a fellow who couldn't make a living with it. "It was made in Idaho and it worked like a big fly rod," says McCoy, 54, who ran a Timbco 425C in the setup. "You toss it way down off the side of the mountain and then drag the timber back up as it's cut, one log at a time. The cutter was working at the bottom and he sure had to know what he was doing."
