Jason Schmidt, owner of J.B. Schmidt Logging, is a young first generation logger who's been in the game since he graduated high school. While he is still under 40, and all of his men are under 30, he has nearly two decades of woods experience under his belt. With that perspective, he shares many of the concerns of loggers throughout the Southeast today. "Something has to be done about fuel prices," Schmidt, 36, says, "and we have to get more out of the paper companies. We are still working with the same rates from years ago." Looking at the state of the industry today, he admits he doesn't really know if he would want his sons to follow in his footsteps or not.
