Sometimes business isn't just business. Carl McDonald, son of respected Georgia logger Harry McDonald, discovered this recently. Carl, a man in his early 30s with two young sons, is suffering with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly called "Lou Gehrig's disease," a progressive and ultimately fatal degenerative neurological disease that destroys nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Since being diagnosed with ALS two years ago, Carl and his family have been moved by an outpouring of support from his community and others in the forest and logging industries, but he wasn't prepared for what was to come.
