We have read with interest the article by Myran et al, concluding that classification of the alar ligaments have no diagnostic value in whiplash-associated disorder (WAD) patients. The conclusion is partly based on a lack of significant difference in proportions of abnormal alar ligaments between WAD patients, persons with chronic neck pain but no diagnosis of WAD, and control persons. However, results for the chronic pain group approximate those for controls, making it difficult to find significant differences on the basis of a single test for overall difference between the groups.
