GRASS farmers, sometimes known also as cattle producers, have one goal for their pastures: to profitably grow cows.Native grasses can help producers reach that goal. "An advantage of native grasses is that they are thrifty with these soil amendments, so they can stay in the black a long time," says Pat Keyser, director of the University of Tennessee Center for Native Grasslands Management. Native grasses such as switchgrass, big bluestem and indiangrass need only about 60 pounds of nitrogen per acre and little else. Conversely, tall fescue, for example, needs 120 to 180 pounds of N per acre.
