Observations on initial foraging strategies of Constrictotermes cyphergaster (Isoptera: Termitidae; Nasutitermitinae) on a two dimensional surface

Although the foraging trails of termite species marked with pheromones are well known, there is little information on how termite begin their search for food. In this study we measured the exit angle from a nest of Constrictotermes cyphergaster when its nest was placed on a fiat surface in the laboratory. The results showed a random distribution of exit angles, indicating that the initial search pattern of this species is not directional.
