Having recently taken over as Chairman of NSA I would firstly like to thank my predecessor, Peter Baber, for his four years in office. Peter will continue to be actively involved in the organisation and help build on the strong position that he has helped achieve for NSA. During my previous tenure as Chairman, NSA had to address not only questions about the integrity of our product and escalating costs associated with concerns over BSE but, in addition, there were problems in the international meat market due to a down turn in the world economy. To follow those difficulties we were then hit by foot and mouth and under David Smith's chairmanship NSA battled to preserve the industry's freedom to operate effectively under a barrage of regulations and restrictions. We will continue to challenge the need for many of these regulations and try to engineer less onerous and more effective solutions that mean that sheep farmers can devote more time to their real business.
