MINNESOTA SECTION SME 68~(th) ANNUAL MEETING 56~(th) MINING SYMPOSIUM AND 3~(rd) ANNUAL TRADE EXPO JAN. 24 to 26

On Jan. 24 to 26, the 68th annual meeting of the Minnesota section SME, the 56th University of Minnesota Mining Symposium and the 3rd annual Trade Expo were held at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center (DECC), with improved attendance at all major functions. Reasons for the increased number of participants include the more favorable level of activity in the iron ore and steel industries, the higher level of interest in these industries because of new developments, and extremely mild weather as compared with subzero temperatures of a year earlier. For the Minnesota section SME meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 25, attendance returned to the plus-500 level for the first time since 1992. Preliminary registration totaled 493 consisting of 250 non-SME members, 225 members and 18 retired. In addition, there were an estimated 20 speakers and others. The SME meeting was up from 458, which was depressed by cold weather in 1994, and also from 470 in 1993.
